Some of the popular sayings in personal development work that are designed to be helpful can actually makes people feel worse. “Choose happiness” is one of those, because many people don’t feel like they’re able to make that choice, and they’re left feeling like they are broken in some way. What usually isn’t discussed is the amount of work, and soul searching it takes for us to be able to truly see it as a choice. It’s not just like picking a flavor of ice cream. If that were true, no one would ever pick depression flavored ice cream. Seeing the choice takes time, so if you’re not in a place to see it yet, don’t worry. There’s nothing wrong with you.
